NBA Lock-Out Over but All Over Social Media

The NBA lock-out is finally over! Thunder up! With the lock-out ending I started to check the two main social media sites to see what fans and players were saying. The minute the lock-out ending my Twitter timeline, and Facebook newsfeed where covered in Thunder fans and Thunder players talking about how happy they were for basketball to be back. Social media is one of the best things for sports, we really see how many fans you have or not in the social media world!

If You Use Facebook And Twitter, Be careful!

Using Facebook and Twitter is a great way to keep up friends, find information and using it for your business. As a college student and future employee of a company, I know I have to be careful about what goes on Facebook and what I say on Twitter. As I read through my news feed on Facebook and my time line on Twitter, and I see what some people are saying I begin to wonder if they think before they post. People need to consider that if they want to get a good job they need to be careful about how they're presenting themselves because your future employers can find everything you post and I don't think you want future employers to see pictures of drinking or see a lot cussing or anything that makes you look bad. I think the younger generation needs to take more into consideration about the image and presentation they give online.

Twitter In Politics

This dinner is important because I'm only president thanks to the work of millions of Americans like the four I just met. —Barack Obama. President Obama tweeted this today and makes me think about how important social media is going to be used in the upcoming elections of 2012. Facebook and Twitter were both used in the 2008 election but in last four years we have seen an explosion of users. This to politicians mean a tool to reach voters. Barack Obama has 10 almost 11 million followers on Twitter including me. This means that there are millions of people that read and see his Twitter account daily, try to get 10 million viewers daily using any other tool. Barack Obama doesn't update his Twitter account himself all the time but his team does a good job of expressing the issues. This is going to be a key tool in the upcoming election. With the growth of social media in last 4 years, any candidate for any political position, would be unwise to not have an active and frequently updated Twitter and Facebook page.

Times Are Changing

Take a minute and think about how business in your life time have had to adapt to the new times. Not just their products or how they make their products but how they market those products. Telemarketing was once all the rave and I can remember when the phone in our house would ring all the time with people trying to sell my parents something. Commercials are another tool that seen a big turn in my life time. Both of these marketing tools have not been as successful has they have in the past. With new technologies the times have changed. We got blocks on our phone for telemarketers, and now with recording live TV and things like netflix these marketing strategies have seen a plummet in my life time.
This brings me to think that Social Media is the new rave in marketing. You can watch a commercial or go to any company web site without a link to their Twitter, Facebook, or both. This is the new revolution in the marketing world. Americans get bored with things very easily and Social Media is no where close to this yet! I think this is a marketing tool that is still very young and not yet seen it's best days. With the younger generation that has grown up around these tools and has seen the explosion of Facebook and Twitter has a bright future learning and mastering this tool for it's marketing purposes. Just like business men and women used the tools of their time to market their company and their products.

All We Need Is Facebook.

A friend of mine today told me, "nothing is official until it's on Facebook." As I laughed at what she said I started to really think about it. As a 22 year old college student, and growing up in "internet age" I started to think how I get my news. I couldn't tell you the last time I watched the news or read the newspaper but I can tell I'm on Facebook at least once a day. Facebook is a source of news now. This is how I found out about the death of Steve Jobs, and the new iphone. Good or bad news the chances of one your friends saying something about it or it being on Facebook somewhere are very high.
After thinking about this some more as a business student I started thinking about the importance of this for a business. The younger generation that has grown up with things like the internet and Facebook, are going to use tools like this to get their news and information. This brings up the thought about how important it is for companies to keep up the times and understand that the need use social media as a marketing and public relations tool for their business. If a business is trying to reach an audience that is under the age of 50 I would highly recommend they use Facebook and keep people updated with what is going on. If it is on Facebook the people who want to find it, will find it! To me all a company really needs is just a simple page with updates about your company, and what your company is all about.

Facebook Using Adverting Modestly

Facebook came out with a new look this week and many people have been expressing whether they like the new look or not. This new look brought to my attention how Facebook since the beginning has done a good job having adverting on their page but not overwhelming the page. I think Facebook has done an amazing job of not crossing the line to make people feel like they're being sold every time they log in their page. This is important for adverting on pages like Facebook, the user does not want to feel like they are being marketed. Facebook could easily fill their page with ads and make more money but I feel this would push people away from it. I think finding a good blend between the information on your page and the ads on your page are very important in this new wave on adverting on the internet.
