Twitter In Politics

This dinner is important because I'm only president thanks to the work of millions of Americans like the four I just met. —Barack Obama. President Obama tweeted this today and makes me think about how important social media is going to be used in the upcoming elections of 2012. Facebook and Twitter were both used in the 2008 election but in last four years we have seen an explosion of users. This to politicians mean a tool to reach voters. Barack Obama has 10 almost 11 million followers on Twitter including me. This means that there are millions of people that read and see his Twitter account daily, try to get 10 million viewers daily using any other tool. Barack Obama doesn't update his Twitter account himself all the time but his team does a good job of expressing the issues. This is going to be a key tool in the upcoming election. With the growth of social media in last 4 years, any candidate for any political position, would be unwise to not have an active and frequently updated Twitter and Facebook page.

  1. This is a really interesting point. Twitter has grown so much over the pas four years. Another point to bring up is the fact that Twitter is popular among the younger generations who often decide not to vote. Twitter could cause this to change drastically this year. With the number of tweets and twitter handles being generated, I feel like younger voters are more apt to take the time to participate in the election. On another side note, I also feel that there will be a major technological advancement in the way we vote soon. This may just be adding some sort of easy, online option.

  2. I agree! Social media is an extremely useful tool because, like you said, it's the only way you can get 10 million people to easily see everything you want them to. People will watch the news and debates and all of the election stuff on TV, but they will also be in Facebook groups and following the candidates on Twitter to see what else they are saying. I think being able to properly use social media can really help them, and I'm sure if they didn't use it they would lose a lot of votes, especially people our age.
